Digital Photography - What's the Big Deal?

I admit it, I've been slow to embrace the digital photography phenomenon. As an amateur photographer, I have two film cameras, an old manual Nikon and a nice autofocus Canon Rebel, and I wasn't particularly tempted to check out the digital craze up until recently, even though each of my children had them for years now. But recently my dad gave me his mid-level Olympus (he didnt like the menus), and I've been giving it a good workout. And, to my delight, I even like it.My number one favorite element about the camera is obvious no film. My father gave me two substantial memory cards, and I can take an unbelievable number of shots without filling up the cards. I dont have developing costs for photos that I dont really want after looking at them (I don't EVER pay to develop my pictures), and since I can see how they look right away, I can purge pictures I don't like to save the storage for other pictures. Taking lots of shots helps me improve, and increases the chances of an excellent photograph as well, and with digital it doesn't cost a cent. My camera has settings on it that enable me to work as if I have film I can set film speed and fiddle with aperture/shutter speed options the same as with my other cameras, so I can utilize my prior experience with photography, which is fine with me. And there's nothing like being able to see your pictures right after you took them.Another terrific thing about digital picture-taking is photo editing. I havent gone out and bought Photoshop yet, but I have my eye on the Elements program for next year or so. I simply use Googles free Picasa and once in a while my PhotoDeluxe program (it came free with my scanner), and just with these I can do an amazing amount of great things with my pictures. One of my favorite features is being able to correct poor exposures (It's a sad fact that I don't always notice backlit situations). Now with a little adjusting, I can save these shots! I remove red-eye easily, sharpen a photo, alter contrast, reduce or intensify colors, and correct excessive unwanted tint (such as from lamplight). One of the best tools is cropping those lucky few who have their own darkroom crop their photos routinely, but the rest of us used to have to take what we got but not anymore! We can pick and choose, and revel in cropping unwanted background, extra sky and turning the shot into a closeup is effortless. Resizing is a snap want some wallets? No problem. 8x10, 4x6, some unusual size a click of the mouse and it's done And dont forget special effects. Depending on the editor, you might add neon glow, turn your photo into a line drawing, create a mosaic, soften your background your imagination can go wild!When you have your masterpiece ready to go, you can choose to print it on special photo paper at home, or you can submit it to a professional photo processor. Using Picasa, you can click and send it to a processor via the internet, and get your professionally printed photos in the mail but only the ones you have decided you want. You can upload your photos to a webpage, email them, use them in a blog or on MySpace they are easy to share.In short, I have been happily won over to digital photography. There is so much fun in having this kind of control over your work that it has actually rejuvenated my love of photography. If you are still holding back, I recommend you just plunge right in. You won't regret it.
